Frequently Asked Questions

Everything Atlanta parents need to know about head lice and our in-home treatment service.

Our Service & Pricing

We are a mobile concierge service, offering convenience and discretion in the privacy of your home. Our philosophy centers on thorough education and empowering families with facts and understanding. We come to you 7 days a week — no salon visit required, no sitting in traffic, no awkward waiting rooms. Founded by a Registered Nurse, we've served over 10,000 Atlanta families since 2015 with a 95% first-visit success rate and an A+ BBB rating.

Head checks are $35 per person (waived if treatment is needed). Treatment is $125 for short hair or $175 for long hair. There's a $125 trip fee for Fulton, DeKalb, and Cobb counties during standard hours, or $225 for after-hours and weekend appointments. No hidden fees — we're upfront because we know no one budgets for lice. We accept Venmo, HSA, FSA, and all major credit cards.

Treatment typically takes 30 minutes to 2 hours per person, depending on hair length, thickness, and severity of infestation. Short hair and buzz cuts can be done in 30 minutes or less. Long, thick hair with a heavy infestation may take up to 3 hours. We never rush — thoroughness is how we achieve our high success rate.

We use an all-natural 6-step process. Hair should be clean and detangled before we arrive. We typically set up in the kitchen where lighting and seating height are best. We check everyone in the home (this is required for our guarantee), usually starting with least likely to most likely. We use professional-grade metal nit combs and pesticide-free enzyme products — no harsh chemicals. Before we leave, we train you on the follow-up combing technique you'll use for the next 14 days.

We serve all of metro Atlanta including Atlanta, Marietta, Roswell, Alpharetta, Sandy Springs, Decatur, Brookhaven, Dunwoody, East Cobb, Kennesaw, Woodstock, Johns Creek, Milton, Smyrna, Buckhead, Midtown, Druid Hills, Emory area, and surrounding communities in Fulton, Cobb, Gwinnett, and DeKalb counties. Other areas may be available — just ask!

Often, yes! We understand lice emergencies don't wait for convenient timing. Call us at 770-776-7913 and we'll do our best to get a specialist to you the same day. We're available 7 days a week, including evenings and weekends.

Our Guarantee & Follow-Up Care

Here's the truth: No lice treatment — ours or anyone's — is 100% guaranteed after just one session. Nits are tiny, camouflaged, and glued to individual hairs. Even the most thorough treatment can miss one. That's why we treat lice removal as a collaborative process. We do the professional treatment and train you on our Quick Comb method. You do 2 minutes of follow-up combing daily for 14 days. When families follow through, re-infestations are rare. We give you the tools and training — you bring the consistency.

Yes! We guarantee our process when families follow our protocol: (1) All family members and caregivers must be available for checking and treatment at the initial visit, (2) Daily quick-combing of treated individuals for 14 days, (3) Communication via email (not text) during the 14-day follow-up period if questions arise. This collaborative approach is how we break the cycle for good.

The 14-day follow-up matches the lice life cycle. Any nit we might have missed will hatch within 7-10 days. Daily combing catches newly hatched nymphs before they can mature (another 7-10 days) and lay new eggs. By combing for the full 14 days, you ensure that nothing survives to restart the cycle. It takes just 2 minutes a day — think of it as insurance on your investment.

Don't panic! Finding a few nits or even a nymph during follow-up combing is not uncommon — that's exactly why we do the 14-day protocol. Take a photo of what you found and email it to us. We'll help you identify it and advise on next steps. Most of the time, you just continue the daily combing. We're here to support you through the entire process.

Sometimes. If it's a severe infestation, if all family members cannot be checked at the initial visit, or if the family doesn't complete the 14-day follow-up protocol, a paid follow-up may be necessary. In most cases, when families follow our instructions, one visit is all you need.

Signs, Symptoms & Identification

Look for: persistent scalp itching (especially behind the ears and at the nape of the neck), a pink rash in those areas, tiny tan or brown eggs (nits) glued to hair shafts close to the scalp, or sesame-seed-sized light brown bugs with six legs. Important: Only about 50% of people with lice actually itch — it can take 4-6 weeks to develop that reaction. If you're unsure, we offer $35 head checks for a definitive answer.

Adult lice are light brown, about the size of a sesame seed, with six legs equipped with claws for gripping hair. They move fast and avoid light. Nits (eggs) are tiny, teardrop-shaped, tan to brownish, and glued to individual hair strands within ¼ inch of the scalp. Unlike dandruff, nits won't brush or flick off — they're cemented on with a glue-like substance. Empty egg casings (hatched nits) are pearly white and found further from the scalp.

Only about 50% of people with lice experience itching. The itch comes from an allergic reaction to lice saliva from their bites — not from the bugs crawling around. It can take 4-6 weeks of infestation for someone to develop this reaction. People taking antihistamines for allergies may never itch at all. That's why visual screening with a professional nit comb is the only reliable way to know for sure.

More common than you'd think. Due to over-use of OTC products (causing lice to mutate and grow resistant) and widespread misinformation, the numbers keep rising. About 1 in 4 children (25%) will get head lice at some point, and roughly 1 in 10 people (10%) has lice at any given time. In a classroom of 30 kids, you can assume 3 of them have it right now. Lice is the second most common childhood ailment after the common cold.

DIY & Over-the-Counter Treatments

You're not alone — and it's not your fault. Lice have mutated and become resistant to the pesticides in over-the-counter treatments like permethrin (Nix) and pyrethrins (RID). We're now dealing with the 5th generation of "super lice" that are essentially immune to these chemicals. Studies show the efficacy of these products has dropped below 20%. That's why professional manual removal with a metal nit comb is now the only reliable solution.

These home remedies don't work reliably. The theory is to "suffocate" lice, but studies show lice can survive being submerged in oil or petroleum jelly for many hours. Even if some adult lice die, these methods don't kill or remove nits (eggs) — and one missed nit restarts the whole cycle in 7-10 days. Plus, you still have to comb everything out of extremely greasy, messy hair. Save yourself the cleanup and frustration.

Tea tree and peppermint oils may help repel lice as a preventive measure, but they don't kill an active infestation or remove nits. Once lice are on a head, they have no way to "retreat" — their claws are designed to grip hair, not let go. We use mint-based products for prevention after treatment, but essential oils alone won't solve an active case. You need physical removal with a proper nit comb.

Hair dye may kill some live adult lice, but it does not kill nits (eggs) — and that's the problem. The chemicals can't penetrate the hard protective shell around the eggs. So you might kill adults, but a new generation hatches 7-10 days later and the cycle continues. Plus, you still need to physically comb out all the dead bugs and remaining nits. It's not a real solution, and it exposes you to harsh chemicals unnecessarily.

DIY typically involves: Multiple failed OTC treatments ($15-30 each), home remedies that don't work, cheap plastic combs that miss nits, hours of frustrating combing, excessive house cleaning, and weeks of anxiety wondering if it worked.

With Lice Happens you get: A trained specialist at your home, professional-grade metal nit combs, safe pesticide-free products, thorough screening of your entire family, complete treatment in one visit, hands-on training for follow-up, and ongoing support for 14 days. When you factor in the cost of multiple OTC treatments, missed work, and the emotional toll — professional treatment often costs less and actually works.

Myths vs. Facts

No — your house cannot be "infested" with lice. This is one of the biggest myths. Head lice can only survive 24-48 hours off a human head because they need our body heat and blood to live. Any louse that falls off is already in the process of dying. You don't need to bomb your house with pesticides, bag stuffed animals for weeks, or buy expensive cleaning products. Just wash bedding and recently worn clothes in hot water, throw hair items (brushes, ties) in the freezer overnight, and focus on treating the heads. That's where lice live — not in your home.

No! Human head lice (Pediculus humanus capitis) only live on humans. They are species-specific parasites. Your dogs, cats, guinea pigs, and other pets cannot catch or spread human head lice. Don't waste money on pet treatments or worry about Fido and Fluffy — they're completely safe.

No — lice cannot jump or fly. They have no wings and their legs are not built for jumping. They only crawl, using six legs equipped with claw-like structures designed to grip hair shafts. That's why direct head-to-head contact is the primary way lice spread. Think selfies, sleepovers, sports huddles, kids playing close together, and sharing earbuds. Sharing brushes, hats, or helmets is possible but much less common.

Absolutely not! Lice actually prefer clean hair — it's easier for them to grip and move around. Head lice are equal-opportunity parasites that don't discriminate based on hygiene, income, or anything else. Getting lice simply means your child had head-to-head contact with someone who has them. It's extremely common and nothing to be ashamed of. That's why our motto is "No Shame, No Blame!"

It's extremely unlikely. Lice grip hair tightly and can survive underwater for several hours by closing their breathing holes. Chlorine at normal pool levels doesn't kill them. However, they're not going to let go and swim to another head. The bigger risk at pools is sharing towels, brushes, or having head-to-head contact with friends — not the water itself.

Lice don't have a season — they're a year-round problem. However, we do see spikes after kids return to school in August/September, after winter break in January, and during summer camp season. Any time kids are together with heads close — sleepovers, sports, parties — there's opportunity for lice to spread. Weekly screening with a nit comb is the best prevention year-round.

Hair Types & Special Situations

Yes, in most cases we can! It really depends on the texture and curl pattern of the hair. We've successfully treated many families with natural, textured, and curly hair throughout metro Atlanta. Some very tight curl patterns or certain protective styles may require extra time or may not be compatible with our comb-out method. If you're unsure, give us a call at 770-776-7913 — we're happy to talk through your specific situation and let you know if we can help.

Unfortunately, no — we are not able to treat lice in dreadlocks. Our process requires combing through every strand of hair from root to tip using a fine-toothed metal nit comb. With dreadlocks, we can't properly visualize the scalp or effectively remove nits and lice. Even if we spotted signs of an infestation, there would be no way to treat without potentially damaging the locs. We recommend consulting with a dermatologist or a loctician who has experience with this issue.

Absolutely! Short hair is actually easier and faster to treat. Boys with buzz cuts typically take 30 minutes or less. The shorter the hair, the fewer places for lice and nits to hide, and the faster we can comb through everything. It's one of the easier treatments we do.

Yes! We treat all hair lengths and thicknesses. Long, thick hair simply takes more time — typically 1.5 to 3 hours depending on the severity of infestation. We section the hair methodically and work through every strand. Please have hair washed, conditioned, and detangled before we arrive to help the process go as smoothly as possible.

Yes! Boys absolutely get lice, even boys with very short hair or buzz cuts. While lice are more commonly found in girls (likely due to longer hair and more head-to-head contact during play), boys are definitely not immune. We treat boys regularly — sports teams, summer camps, and classroom outbreaks affect everyone.

School, Camp & Logistics

Immediately after treatment. The American Academy of Pediatrics and the National Association of School Nurses no longer recommend "no-nit" policies. Once we've completed treatment, your child is not contagious during the follow-up combing period. Your child should not miss school due to head lice. We can provide documentation for your school if they require it.

Yes — and we require it for our guarantee. Checking everyone in the household is essential because lice spread through head-to-head contact within families. We frequently find cases in siblings or parents who had no idea they were carrying lice (remember, only 50% of people itch). Screening and treating everyone prevents the cycle from continuing. This includes caregivers, nannies, and anyone who has regular close contact.

Yes — just as you'd want to know, other parents will appreciate the heads-up so they can check their children. The school nurse should also be informed so she can monitor the situation and notify other families discreetly. Remember: No Shame, No Blame! Lice are incredibly common, and early detection helps everyone. The more we reduce the stigma, the faster outbreaks get contained.

Please have hair freshly washed, conditioned, and detangled — no product in the hair (no oils, gels, leave-in conditioners, or sprays). We work best in the kitchen where lighting and seating height are ideal. Have paper towels available and clear some counter space. That's it — we bring all the professional tools and products. Everyone who needs to be checked should be home and available.

The best prevention is early detection through weekly screening with a metal nit comb. Other tips: Keep long hair pulled back in braids, buns, or ponytails. Use our mint-based repellent spray daily. Teach kids to avoid head-to-head contact and not share hair items, hats, or helmets. Don't tell kids to avoid friends who have lice — that spreads stigma, not prevention. A cool head and informed mind should prevail!
